MDT LSS-RF GEN2 RIMFIRE CHASSIS SYSTEM

Modular Driven Technologies as been releasing new products and next generation rifle chassis systems pretty regularly last few months and It really pleases me to see them giving Rimfire rifles their fair of attention. I’m a big proponent of MDT as their product quality is equal to their customer service. Modular Driven Technologies has been outstanding with regards to our sister site Modular Rifle and our rifle builds. To give you and idea of the popularity and quality of the MDT rifle chassis they are the chassis of choice that’s stock on many factory rifles today

This post is to announce their latest chassis the LSS-RF GEN2. The MDT LSS-RF is second generation of the rimfire version of their insanely popular LSS Centerfire Chassis System

View the original version LSS Rimfire Chassis post. Visit our CZ 452 American Upgrade Project page that will utilize the first generation LSS chassis.

MDT LSS-RF GEN2 RIMFIRE CHASSIS SYSTEM

The LSS-RF next generation has arrived! Created for popular .22LR caliber rifles, the LSS-RF Gen2 brings the addition of the following new features:

  • M-Lok pattern attachment slots on sides and bottom of the forend
  • Barricade-stop grooves ahead of mag-well
  • Side-relieved mag well

MDT LSS-RF GEN2 CHASSIS SYSTEM DETAILS

Our LSS-RF chassis system for .22LR caliber rifles is lightweight and compact, and adopts the same footprint as the LSS. You will notice a significant improvement in accuracy due to the V-shaped bedding and free floated forend, which allows for barrel contours up to 1″ in diameter.

The chassis system is manufactured out of billet 6061-T6 aluminum, and has been finished with Cerakote™ in Black or Flat Dark Earth (FDE).

To keep this chassis system compact, we have designed it to take carbine AR-15 buttstocks. Fixed buttstocks can also be mounted with the use of a fixed stock adapter.

The LSS-RF uses the factory magazine, and each chassis is compatible with all factory barrel contours.

Because we have lowered the buttstock interface, The Savage Mark II, CZ 455 and Ruger American can use iron sights with this chassis. If you are using a scope, we recommend a stock with a cheek riser.

MDT LSS-RF GEN2 CHASSIS SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY

The MDT LSS-22 chassis system is currently manufactured for the following bolt action rifle platforms:

  • Ruger American
  • Savage A22
  • Savage B22
  • CZ 455
  • Savage Mark II – compatible with 93R17
  • Anschutz Match 54 – Model 1710 and 1712

The LSS-RF now also fits 17 HMR or 22 WMR versions and will fit all heavy factory barrels.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • The Ruger American requires the two OEM fixing components in addition to the magazine
  • The Savage Mark II, CZ 455 and Ruger American can use iron sights
  • The CZ 455 will not work with the CZ 455 Tuning trigger

MOUNTING AND COMPATIBLE ACCESSORIES

The LSS-RF chassis is designed to accept any AR-15 carbine buttstock and pistol grip (purchased separately), and allows for customization with a wide variety of accessories.

Mounting holes are spaced for Magpul style L5 (11 slots), and L3 (7 slots) rails (1.600” / 3.200”) to be used on the bottom of the forend and are compatible with our Aluminium Picatinny Rails with Flush Cup Sling Mounts.

RUGER PRECISION RIMFIRE 17 HMR VS 22 WMR

RUGER PRECISION RIMFIRE 17 HMR VS 22 WMR

Picture of a RUGER PRECISION RIMFIRE 17 HMR VERSUS 22 WMR

RUGER PRECISION RIMFIRE .17 HMR VERSUS .22 WMR WHICH WOULD YOU BUY?

I was initially contemplating buying a .22 LR Ruger Precision Rimfire aka “RPR” but that changed when MDT released their LSS Rimfire Chassis for the CZ American. I’m not giving up on owning a Ruger Precision Rimfire I just moved the target to a choice between a .17 HMR or .22 WMR.

This isn’t one of those “which is better .22 Magnum or .17 HMR?” posts, the internet is filled with commentary on that topic. In my opinion while the two rimfire cartridges overlap a bit they serve different purposes which I’ll briefly cover further down. This post is instead about which caliber .17 HMR or .22 HMR did you buy or would you buy if you were in the market for a non .22lr Ruger RPR?

RUGER PRECISION RIMFIRE .17 HMR VERSUS .22 WMR

If you want to read a great article on .17 HMR versus .22 WMR that isn’t merely clickbait and internet regurgitation, Chuck Hawks has the best write up. For our post, I will simplify the subject.

Hornady 17 HMR 20gr XTP

Hornady 17 HMR 20gr XTP

  • 17 HMR: The super-accurate .17 HMR has a higher muzzle velocity, a flatter trajectory delivering much less energy than the .22 WMR. .17 HMR ammo costs more than .22 HMR

  • 22 WMR: The larger, heavier bullet of the .22 HMR has a lower muzzle velocity but generates more energy than the .17 HMR

Hornady 22 WMR 30gr

.17 HMR VERSUS .22 WMR – INTENDED TARGET MATTERS

When choosing between the .17 HMR and .22 WMR (.22 Mag), it would appear that how your planning to use your rifle might be the best way to determine which caliber is best for you. The .17 HMR has a lightweight modern bullet profile that, when combined with high velocity, lends itself to long-range accuracy but without much punch. The .22 WMR is not quite as accurate or far-reaching as the .17 HMR, but it delivers a lot more energy on targets within its useable range than the .17 HMR.

For me, I’m simply a target shooter and only care about accuracy, and that makes .17 HMR a natural choice. If I were looking to take out small game, I would choose the .22 WMR all day. Not to say that the .17 HMR can’t be used on the same game at equal distances, but the .22 magnum is simply a bigger hammer at 100 yards.

RUGER PRECISION RIMFIRE .17 HMR VERSUS .22 WMR COMMON FEATURES

  • Molded, one-piece chassis and adjustable buttstock assembly are manufactured with glass-filled nylon for strength, stiffness, and stability, making a solid foundation for accuracy each and every shot. Adjustable buttstock features a flat Picatinny bag rider making it easy to affix a rear monopod. A molded-in window provides a tether point for your squeeze bag, and a metal QD pocket makes it easy to secure a sling.
  • Quick-Fit adjustable Precision Rimfire stock allows the length of pull and comb height to be quickly and easily adjusted to get proper fit over a wide range of shooter sizes, outerwear, and shooting positions. Indicating marks molded into the chassis help you quickly return to a previous position.
  • Big-Gun bolt throw adjustment enables shooters to change from a rimfire 1-1/2″ bolt throw to a short-action centerfire 3″ bolt throw, reducing the chance of short-stroking your bolt in competition.
  • Ruger Marksman Adjustable™ trigger is externally adjustable, with a trigger pull range of 2.25 to 5 pounds; wrench storage in a buttstock compartment.
  • Ruger’s own AR-Pattern pistol grip and safety selector provides an extended reach for maximum control and access to the 45°, reversible safety selector. May be configured with most AR-style grips and selectors.
  • Anodized 0 MOA Picatinny scope base makes it easy to mount and zero optics.
  • Oversized bolt handle for positive bolt manipulation (same as the Ruger Precision® Rifle).
  • 15″ aluminum free-float handguard is black hard-coat anodized aluminum. It features Magpul® M-LOK® slots on all four sides for improved scope clearance for long-range scopes and easy mounting of M-LOK-compatible rails and accessories.
  • 18″ target barrel is cold hammer-forged from 1137 alloy steel to create ultra-precise rifling for excellent accuracy. The barrel can be replaced easily by a competent gunsmith using AR-style wrenches and headspace gauges.
  • 1/2″-28 threaded barrel for standard muzzle accessories, like the Silent-SR® suppressor, comes with a factory-installed thread protector covering both the threads and crown.
  • Accepts Ruger® magnum rimfire magazines, including the JMX-1 rotary magazine and the BX-15® Magnum magazine.

Ed Brown 1911 .22 Conversion

I was quite excited to see a 1911 .22 conversion listed on the Ed Brown website. Unfortunately upon reading the description I quickly learned Ed Brown is simply offering the TacSol .22 conversion. Ed Brown produces some fantastic 1911 handguns so I still take this as an endorsement of the Tactical Solution .22 1911 Conversion.

Ed Brown .22 1911 Conversion By TacSol

Crafted from heat treated steel, the TacSol 2211 slide and barrel converts your pistol to .22 LR while maintaining the weight and feel of the 1911 pistol. This means a realistic shooting experience for accurate training and shooting.  A seamless fit on your Government or Commander length 1911 will provide all the reliability and accuracy TacSol is known for. Works with any Ed Brown 1911. Only full size magazines are available, so not intended for use with a Compact/Officer’s frame, although it will technically still work if care is taken not to slam the mags into the frame.  The 22 conversion includes everything you need. The slide/barrel/spring assembly, threaded barrel with thread protector, 10 round polymer magazine, and two interchangeable rails, a classic style version for use with the included adjustable iron sight, and a Weaver/Picatinny rail version for use with red dot optic mounting systems.

Nothing embodies the classic sidearm more than the 1911 pistol. Its straight-forward design and reliability have made it one of most popular pistols in history. At Ed Brown Products we have found the TacSol 2211 conversion to be the most reliable in existence. With this conversion you can shoot and train without breaking the bank. Best results will be achieved with high velocity, quality ammunition.

DRAKE A17-A22 Match Competition Long Range Tactical Rifle

DRAKE A17-A22 Match Competition Long Range Tactical Rifle

Picture of a DRAKE A17-A22 MATCH COMPETITION LONG RANGE TACTICAL RIFLE

DRAKE A17/A22 Match Competition Long Range Tactical Rifle

The Drake A17 / A22 chassis rifle has been designed to further improve on the 2016 NRA rifle of the year, with the intent to meet the discerning needs of the Precision Rifle Shooter (PRS), Varmint Hunters and young shooters learning marksmanship fundamentals.

The host rifle is a Savage® A17 or A22 that is dropped into a custom fitted Drake A17 / A22 Monolithic design rifle chassis. Drakes forward, out of the box planning, considered restrictive state firearms laws regarding semi auto rifles with pistol grips, that resulted in our A17 / A22 flexible design.

Drake Associates A17/A22 Match Competition Long Range Tactical Rifle

This chassis has the ability to switch between a traditional AR style pistol grip and a more traditional rifle stock design, making this chassis option restrictive state complaint.

Additional design features include MAGPUL® M LOK attachment points; a varying selection of colors in both Cerakote and Mil Spec anodization, improved magazine tolerances over factory stocks and a night vision hood interface channel. Complete drop in compatibility requires no modification to factory barreled action.

Additionally, Drake has designed a 16” heavy barreled variant, further increasing the performance of the hard hitting .17 HMR cartridge.
Running a gauntlet ranging from young shooters to Combat Experienced Military Snipers, the DRAKE A17 / A22 TACTICAL COMPETITION CHASSIS RIFLE has proven to be a well accepted and truly enjoyable rifle to shoot.

CHASSIS ONLY OPTION

DRAKE A17 / A22 TACTICAL COMPETITION CHASSIS ONLY OPTION can be purchased separate for current A17 / A22 owners. This will give current owners the ability to upgrade their A17 / A22 rifles to this current configuration.

Savage Arms A22 Pro Varmint Rifle

Savage Arms A22 Pro Varmint Rifle

Savage Arms A22 Pro Varmint .22 LR Rifle 47217

Savage is clearly looking to steal some potential Ruger 10/22 customers with their A17 and A22 series rifles. Time will tell if Savage poses an actual threat or not. This brings us to this post of the A22 Pro Varmint Rifle. At $300 street price your getting a light weight Boyds stock, fluted 22 inch barrel, picatinny railed receiver and an Accu-Trigger. Currently the reviews are a little mixed. The stock is lighter than some expect, the trigger needs some polishing and some examples need to barrel channel sanded slightly to make it free float. The magazine complaints are resolved using Butler Creek BCA22LR25 25 round Savage A22 Magazines. The good with this .22 beside the price point is the accuracy. Many early reviews reporting great accuracy with quality target ammunition and the aforementioned issues addressed.

I think one miss on Savage’s part is the lack of a threaded barrel. I also wonder why not simply design the gun to use 10/22 magazines instead of their legacy unpopular design. Note: The Butler Creek .22LR magazines don’t remain in stock long, act fast when you find them.

I’m tempted to buy an A22 Pro Varmint and replace the Boyd’s stock with a Drake A17/A22 Tactical Competition Chassis.

Savage Arms A22 Pro Varmint

The Savage ’A Series has proven itself for reliability and accuracy. Now shooters have an even more effective option with the A22 Pro Varmint. The rifle’s Boyds Pro Varmint rifle stock provides superior ergonomics and a light weight, extremely stable platform for the fluted heavy barrel. A one-piece Picatinny rail and user-adjustable AccuTrigger allow shooters to tailor the rifle to their exact needs, and the 10-round rotary magazine offers fast cycling. The straight-blowback action ensures safe and consistent cycling.

Savage Arms A22 Pro Varmint Features

  • One-piece Picatinny rail
  • Heavy carbon steel barrel with straight fluting
  • Straight-blowback semi-automatic action
  • User-adjustable AccuTrigger
